Health – it’s a word that can take on a very different meaning to anyone you might ask. What does it mean to you? You’re at your peak performance and vitality? You consider yourself relatively healthy with no chronic conditions? Or maybe you’re content just being able to put your feet on the ground each morning, and get through your day.
The health spectrum is something I’ve been very thoughtful about for several years. And I’m now channeling that mindfulness into a passion for helping others uncover what the word “health”means to them.
My journey to uncovering health and wellbeing started in my late twenties when I moved across the country from my hometown of Albuquerque, NM to the big city of Chicago. I felt anxious, lonely and looking to connect with others. I jumped at any chance to socialize. Living in a mostly cold weather climate, my life seemed to revolve around parties, alcohol and food. I tried very diligently to work off mybad diet by going to the gym daily for an hour, only to start the bad cycle all over again the next day.
Surprisingly, I never connected the dots with my lifestyle and the way it made me feel physically, mentally and emotionally. I spent years going from doctor to doctor trying to figure out why I was fatigued, bloated, depressed, had mood swings and digestive issues, slept poorly, and never truly felt well. Every doctor sent me on my way with a new prescription, which of course, didn’t help. I finally gave up focusing on it and resolved to just deal with it.
Flash forward three years after moving to Chicago. I was married and trying to start a family, and had challenges all the way around. Modern medicine intervened and poof – I was pregnant. I was blessed with a very healthy, beautiful little boy. You might think my little miracle would prompt me to change my habits and take better care of myself. It did not. In fact, my health and wellbeing actually went downhill. I short-changed my maternity leave, juggled Corporate America, motherhood, two young boys, and continued to lose myself in the process. I felt stressed and out of control. Add to that all the bills…big house, expensive car, college savings, the right clothes, shoes and handbags. Before long, my body, mind and spirit shut down. Nothing made sense any more. I lost the joy in everything. I was hanging onto toxic relationships, working a thankless job, eating crap and trying my hardest to go through the motions of each day. In the still of the night, I would cry myself to sleep. Life began to completely unravel, and hopelessness set in.
In my search for answers, one night I had an amazing dream. I had a clarity unlike anything else I had ever experienced.
I was in control.
I had the key to my wellbeing.
I realized to my astonishment that the answers had always been within me. I was able to pull myself out of a very dark hole and see the beautiful, abundant, amazing sunshine. And all of that inspired me to want to help others implement small, consistent changes to find the light, health, love and vitality within them.
With my newfound purpose, I quit my corporate job and received a certification as an Integrative Nutrition Health coach from Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I now choose to love myself and respect my body in a healthy way. My passion has been fueled even more by my desire to always learn and grow. I am currently enrolled at Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, to graduate in January 2019. Last year, I started my own company, SimpleWisdom Wellbeing Solutions, where I help lots of other people in the corporate arena who are struggling with work-life balance and their health. I also coach people privately.
As I now approach mid-life, my body continues to amaze me in good (and not so good!) ways. Let’s be honest – with each milestone birthday it’s hard for many of us to lose those extra 5 or 10 pounds. Sleeping through the night can be a challenge. And let’s not forget all the fun things happening with our hormones!
I now have a mission to help men and woman facing mid-life health challenges create a vibrant, fulfilling life that they always dreamed of. I teach them how to feel great in their bodies, take a mindful approach to their wellbeing, and learn to hush the damaging self-talk. This is my life’s calling and passion. I am a single Mom with two amazing boys and have two adorable rescue dogs. I feel better than I ever have and look forward to sharing my guidance with you!
